The sociocultural centre Fontiñas

Fontiñas
The socio-cultural centre, where our German volunteer Annika works, is located next to the shopping centre Area Central in the district Fontiñas. (According to Annika, the location is quite useful if you realize during work that the fridge is, once again, empty.) The centre Fontiñas covers in total an area of 2,7000 square meters and consists of various different institutions.

The centre consists of...
To start, there is an informatics room where you can use the internet (for free!) and where media classes for the elderly take place. In addition to that, there is a library where you can relax reading books, the newspaper or magazines.

For keeping the children occupied during rainy days (fortunately we have so many of them) there is a play library (“ludoteca”) stocked with games of every kind: games for developing cooperation, socialisation, child development and much more.

Annika and her work in Fontiñas:
In the evenings Annika works in the play library where the children come to after school in order to finish the day playing. The play library itself consists of two major rooms: a spacious one for free play and a smaller one for board games. From 5.00 to 6.30 pm the bigger room serves as a meeting place for children and babies from 0 to 5 years and their parents. Afterwards, the elder kids can use the room for letting off steam playing football and other ball games. In the meantime, in the other room, there are activities like handicraft or language games for the others.

To finish off, we have asked Annika some questions about her work, the kids and her favourite games:

The play library (“ludoteca”) in the centre Fontiñas in two words:
vivid, loud!

The best thing about your work: The kids, of course, and the fact that I can not only learn about working with kids, but also about myself.

My favourite game / activity: I like games best in which everybody can participate.

The most boring game:
It’s imposible to feel bored when playing with the kids!

My best experience with the kids (until now): For me it’s always nice to see how even the shy kids open up and become outgoing when they are playing.

A difficult thing about my work: Right now, the most difficult thing for me is to understand the kids when they are talking. In addition to that, I sometimes find it difficult establishing a relationship with the small children because they are always with their parents.
