Semana Santa in Santiago

Between the 29th of March (Palm Sunday) and the 5th of April (Easter Sunday) the Holy Week was celebrated here. The city was full of pilgrims and tourists who wanted to see the Easter-processions of which every day at least one took place.

The participants wear hoods with conical tip which cover the entire face. The completely covering clothes make it possible to demonstrate penance while at the same time masking ones identity.

Furthermore they carry sculptures of different scenes of the Passion of Christ or of Virgin Mary.

Everything is accompanied by slow and solemn music from marching bands who play drums, bagpipes and trumpets.
