5 things I got from my EVS project

My name is Sasha and I work in Civic Center Santa Marta. Normally I spend my time in playing room with children 3-12 y.o. We have different activities like reading books, playing boarding games and when we have to celebrate something (and trust me in Spain we have a lot of celebrations) we prepare posters, costumes, etc. I always have something to do in my Center. But I love my project not only for this.

I have 5 important things I got from my project and I am going to tell what does it mean to be volunteer in Santiago de Compostela ;)

1. To work in real conditions with real boss, colleagues, responsibilities and schedule. Yes, maybe it sounds a bit scary, but in my center, all people are so friendly and open-minded that sometimes I feel that it is just a summer camp. We have a lot of fun. And I love my talkative compañeras de aula de juegos.

2. To have a lot of new friends from all over the world. During my project, I met other volunteers from different European countries: from Portugal to Finland. But it is not the limit! Santiago de Compostela has a big University, so, now I know many people from Latin America, the USA, Middle East, etc.

3. To have new knowledges and to share my experience. When I came to do my project, I had 3 degrees, almost 10 years of work experience and strong desire to try something new. So, I tried many new things I would never do in my previous life, I improved my language, I shared a lot with my volunteer colleagues and with other people.

4. To travel around Spain and other countries. To leave abroad is a good chance to travel and discover the country of your living and some countries around. Some of your trips even payed by the project! I had unforgeable trip to Canfranc (I would never think that I can go so far!) – a small village in the Pyrenees, 5 kilometres to France – where we had our first training about the Youth Pass, Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps. Also, I had a chance to visit Portugal, Canarias Island. And very soon I’m going to travel to Mallorca and small village near the Málaga. Also for the project things.

5. To discover beautiful Galicia and the best city in the world Santiago de Compostela! Of course, I would like to travel more around all the country. But for truth, Galicia is a little bit bad located to travel more. You should plan in very advanced (if you wanna buy cheap plane tickets) or spend a lot of time ( if you going to travel by train, by bus or by car) because first you should go to Madrid and from there – go to the other place. But! Galicia is sooooo beautiful! If you have a car (or friends with the car you can discover absolutely amazing natural places 1-2 hours from Santiago. Long beaches, waterfalls, cliffs, old Celtics’ towns, natural parks… Galicia is the Paradise and Santiago de Compostela is a capital of the Paradise! Because the city located in the centre of Galicia. And it is very comfortable for going all around this region.
